The reason why bands like kings of leon, or pink floyd stay evergreen is because they talk about intense, masochistic, sadistic dreamlike desires or state of mind. The reason why psychedelic designs never go out of style is because its a hardcopy image of what goes on in your head when under the influence of chemicals. Everybody who has experienced it loves being in that state, and glimpses of that world in your everyday life, such as in artwork around u lets u escape reality and experience revelry.

Excellent thought! It really makes a lot of sense. Thinking of it, good music always puts your mind and body in harmony and in a kind of a meditative state (escaping reality). It also makes me realise that it's the linear melodic line along with the unpredictable harmony help you reach that state and the front end of music (lyrics, video, etc,.) hardly counts. Tequila or Whiskey becomes irrelevant once it reaches your tummy, it's the ethanol that gives you high ;-)
Most successful artists want to realise that state when they create their music and also take the listeners along with them, perhaps more easily with psychedelic patterns. A song/music created based on real life situations/dreams can only be cherised at a definite point in time and thus it fades as the time ticks.
